We believe in the opportunity for enduring social benefit to regional economies, enabled by a surplus of clean and dependable energy.
The vehicle by which we will deliver that clean and dependable energy, in turn driving socio-economic value, is the nuclear power produced from small modular reactors (SMRs).
We are the UK’s only independent SMR development company, and we create the connection between a region’s energy demand (to meet its economic ambitions) and the capability required to deliver it. We are agnostic about the SMR technologies being developed.
We bring decades of nuclear development and regulatory experience together with private investors. Collectively this makes the promise of clean and dependable energy a reality NOW.
What we do
CNP has the capability to get fiscally positive nuclear power on stream now.
We are a team of nuclear leaders with an unrivalled track record in delivering complex, large-scale, first-of-a-kind nuclear projects, and a history of working successfully with UK regulators.
Together with our strategic partners (including PA Consulting, Jacobs, and Interpath Advisory) we have the experience required to deliver - from acquiring and managing private investment, obtaining and holding nuclear site licences, through to creating innovative off-take strategies.
We are a ‘thin intelligent client’ and will be only the ingredients that are missing and required to deliver the project.
The need for new nuclear is clear, compelling and urgent.
The British Energy Security Strategy has established a clear mandate for new nuclear: 24GW of new nuclear capacity by 2050.
UK Government has also committed to delivering a decarbonised power system by 2035; new nuclear is at the heart of this strategy.
The Government has a stated ambition to drive economic growth of 2.5 per cent, and this will require significant investment in new energy.
We know that this will happen. It simply must. The question is when - and also what part, if any, Britain will play in the wider and valuable global market.
The benefits are material for the UK…
The CNP model meets many of the Government policy outcomes whilst being 100 per cent fiscally neutral. For example:
Net Zero (delivering c.1GW of clean, dependable power by 2032).
Levelling up (£billions of inward investment).
Growth (thousands of high value jobs).
Export growth (triggering a global market for UK sovereign technology, fuels etc).
UK-USA nuclear co-operation (inward investment and routes to market for US and UK supply chains).
This private sector-funded development will materially reduce the cost and risk for those later SMRs that follow – including any Treasury-funded projects that may happen in the future.
The solution is known.
Small modular reactor (SMR) technology is essential to meeting the need for clean energy. They are flexible, investable, and the technology is well understood.
At a local level, we will engage with host communities to build understanding and support for this way of generating a surplus of clean and dependable energy - and the social and economic benefits it offers.
However, there is a gap.
Previously there was no development capability to deploy SMRs in the UK. The only route historically to nuclear energy has been via the public sector model that has struggled for so long to deliver giga-scale mega-projects.
…and for the host communities.
The socio-economic outcomes are material, enduring and several, including:
Employment in the development and build phases.
Secondary employment and inward investment during operation – hydrogen, smart farming, data, for example.
Regional community benefits including the opportunity for district heating from warm water off-take.
The host community will own an equity stake in the business.
Why we do what we do
-
Our Purpose
To make sure our mission is sustainable, we manage and make decisions against the triple bottom line of People, Planet, Profit…
-
People
We think it’s right and proper that the communities who host the projects should benefit directly from them. The communities enjoy the economic effects of the operation, and are equity holders in it.
-
Planet
We will deliver clean, sustainable energy in the shortest practical timescale and thereby amplify its positive environmental effect.
-
Profit
For us to continue to deliver on our purpose, we will deliver commercially attractive outcomes for our investors.
How we do what we do
-
Our principles
We know that to deliver on our purpose we must combine ‘positive disruptive thinking’ with market-leading nuclear expertise and experience.
We will not simply regurgitate the accepted approaches and behaviours only because they are ‘the nuclear way’.
Instead, in pursuit of our purpose we will be guided by three core principles in everything we do. While not exhaustive, these principles describe the type of inclusive, inquisitive and purposeful environment that will enable us to deliver.
These principles articulate our culture, from how we recruit (for strengths and attitudes), to how we drive and manage performance (outcomes not activity).
-
#1 - Adults only
We only employ responsible, accountable grown-ups who share and are excited by our purpose.
It’s about our purpose, outcomes, and delivering as a team.
We disagree agreeably, and hold each other to account without falling out.
‘I don’t know’ and ‘I’m not sure’ are honest and valued responses.
-
#2 - Bring your dog to work
Be just weird enough.
We know there’s nothing as dangerous as an idea if it’s the only one you have.
We encourage - indeed we require - the discordant idea, the left-field suggestion, and alternative experience. To work like this requires an inquisitive and respectful mindset; we never want to be the smartest person in the room.
-
#3 - It's all about the outcomes
A good plan delivered today is more valuable than a perfect plan delivered tomorrow.
We will never lose sight of the value represented by our purpose. Every decision we take will be calibrated against that goal. We actively and openly trade calculated risks for value.
We will remain a ‘thin and intelligent client’ delivering value through enduring supply partnerships.
